FUN AND INTERESTING MEDIA Week 10

What can we learn from the stars?
Located in PotPourri from Dr. V. and the TA's found in From Dr. M. Bunch...

Henry Lin: What we can learn from galaxies far, far away....

CUE INTRO MUSIC!

Just kidding! If only right!! Today's TED Talk (click here) discussed how "...studying the properties of the universe's largest pieces...we can learn quite a lot about scientific mysteries in our own world and galaxy." First off I would like to say, this kid is too cute! You can just feel his energy flowing to the audience, his passion in his eyes, revealing just how much he loves astronomy! Overall, this partial TED talk was very interesting, when Henry Lin explains how big the universe is, it really puts into perspective how big it is. The part about stuff being made of dark matter, rather than atoms, was interesting as well, because it seems it has unlimited possibilities. What happens when galaxy clusters collide? A particle accelerator at a huge scale, meaning we could observe these transformations in science. His dark energy segment was also interesting because this explains the ever expanding universe!

I really liked his energy, it was so passionate that I wanted to pull out my old telescope and go look at the starts!

Insights and Discoveries Week 12

So today's lecture was returning speaker Prof. Rodney Hill! As great as his lecture was last time, I can't wait to see what he prepared for today!
Today's lecture was entitled, THE SINGULARITY, in which we firstly discussed, how the world's lifespan, fertility, and longevity, basically...it's looking okay, right now, but if we don't fix the problem of "falling fertility rates and increasing longevity, the ability to meet financial requirements for the elderly will diminish as the support ration (worker-to-retirees) will continue to shrink."

The next thing we talked about...was more interesting...I personally find The Singularity particularly interesting because it means humanity is evolving and excelling at things we, as humanity, thought never seemed possible. For example,
We might soon hear a new generation of robots say they will act and think just like humans.
The ambitious goal of DARPA's project "physical intelligence" is to create robots that are controlled by a living brain!
Lets just hope these robots don't try anything like this...

The prospect is still exciting nonetheless. I really enjoyed the section about all of the new things that humans are creating, creating things out of nothing, I believe that is the gift of the human race, and the human race sure is using their gift effectively! :)

3D printing life saving surgeries, robot journalists, and effective AI's are only some of the things changing humanity as a whole, and personally, I am excited to be born in this time and are able to experience all of the many changing lifestyles. My mother was always talking about wanting to have a bionic eye, because her eyes are very damaged, so hopefully soon, she will be able to have good, clear, successful vision because of what humanity has created for her!

One quote that stood out to me in this lecture
See you next week!! Thanks for stopping by!!
